Why I'm walking to World Arthritis Day

I'm excited to share that I'm participating in the Versus Arthritis Step Challenge! This cause is especially meaningful to me because I’ve been living with psoriatic arthritis. It’s a daily battle that affects my joints, energy levels, and overall quality of life. Despite the challenges, I’m determined to stay active and push through for those who, like me, face this painful condition.

Every step I take and every donation I receive will help fund crucial research into finding better treatments and, hopefully, a cure for arthritis. Your sponsorship will directly contribute to improving the lives of those affected by this disease, including myself. Please consider supporting me in this challenge—together, we can make a real difference!

Tuesday 27th Aug

Living a rheumatology disease like psoriatic arthritis (PsA) or any other form of arthritis is no easy feat. The daily struggles with pain, stiffness, and fatigue are challenges that many of us face. That’s why, from October 1st to 10th, I’m participating in the "Walk to World" challenge, organized by Versus Arthritis. This initiative encourages people to walk 10,000 steps each day, raising awareness for all types of rheumatology diseases. Let me share why this challenge is so significant to me and how it benefits those of us living with these conditions.

Understanding Rheumatology Diseases

Rheumatology diseases encompass a wide range of autoimmune and inflammatory conditions that primarily affect the joints, muscles, and bones. These diseases, which include psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and ankylosing spondylitis, can lead to chronic pain, fatigue, and reduced mobility. For many, managing a rheumatology disease involves not just medication but also lifestyle adjustments, including staying active despite the discomfort.

Why the 10,000 Steps Challenge?

The goal of walking 10,000 steps a day—approximately five miles—may seem daunting, especially for those living with a rheumatology disease. However, this challenge is about more than just hitting a step count; it’s about promoting movement, raising awareness, and supporting those who live with these conditions every day.

1. Promoting Movement: Regular physical activity is essential for managing rheumatology diseases. While it might seem counterintuitive to exercise when you're in pain, staying active helps to reduce joint stiffness, improve muscle strength, and maintain mobility. Walking is a low-impact exercise that can be adapted to your own pace and ability, making it an accessible option for many people with rheumatology conditions.

**2. **Raising Awareness**: By taking part in the Walk to World challenge, we’re not just helping ourselves—we’re also raising awareness about rheumatology diseases. These conditions are often misunderstood or underestimated, with many people assuming that arthritis is simply a part of aging. In reality, rheumatology diseases can affect anyone at any age, and they have a significant impact on quality of life. Through this challenge, we’re bringing attention to the realities of living with these diseases and the need for ongoing research and support.

**3. **Building a Supportive Community**: The Walk to World challenge isn’t just an individual journey; it’s a collective effort. Whether you’re living with a rheumatology disease or supporting someone who is, participating in this challenge connects you to a larger community. Together, we can share our experiences, encourage each other, and celebrate every step we take toward better health.

**4. **Empowering Self-Care**: Setting a goal of 10,000 steps a day is a powerful way to take control of your health. It’s a reminder that even on the toughest days, every step counts. The Walk to World challenge empowers participants to focus on what they can do, rather than what their condition might prevent them from doing. It’s about small, consistent efforts that add up to big changes in our physical and mental well-being.

 Why October 1st-10th?

The first 10 days of October mark a special period dedicated to raising awareness for rheumatology diseases. By committing to 10,000 steps each day during this time, I’m joining thousands of others in shining a spotlight on the challenges and triumphs of living with these conditions. It’s a personal commitment to my health and a public statement of solidarity with everyone affected by rheumatology diseases.

How You Can Join the Challenge

Whether you’re living with a rheumatology disease or simply want to support those who are, I invite you to join me in the Walk to World challenge. You don’t have to hit exactly 10,000 steps—what matters is the effort and the intention behind it. Set a goal that’s right for you, and walk alongside us, either in spirit or step by step.

Together, we can make a difference. Let’s take those steps, raise awareness, and show the world the strength of the rheumatology community. Every step we take is a step towards better understanding, better treatment, and better lives for those living with these conditions.
